Commission Expense Accrual
What is a commission expense accrual?
A commission expense accrual is the journal entry that records commission in the period the sale happened, rather than in the period the money is paid.
It exists because of the matching principle. Maya closes a $50,000 deal in February and earns $4,000. She is not paid until the March payout period. If the expense is only recorded when the cash leaves, February shows the revenue with no commission cost against it, and March shows a commission cost with no revenue. Both months are wrong, and so is every margin figure derived from them.
The accrual fixes this by recognizing the expense when it is incurred, not when it is paid.
The journal entries
Maya earns $4,000 of commission in February. It is paid on 15 March.
February: accrue the expense
The expense hits February, where the revenue is. The liability sits on the balance sheet, recording that the company owes $4,000 it has not yet paid.
March: pay it
Note what the March entry does not touch: the P&L. The expense was already taken in February. March simply extinguishes the liability and moves the cash. That is the whole point of the accrual, and it is the part people find counter-intuitive: paying commission is not a commission expense. The expense happened a month earlier.
When the estimate is wrong
An accrual is an estimate, and estimates are often wrong. Suppose Maya's deal is reviewed and one booking was $48,000 rather than $50,000, so her actual commission is $3,840, not the $4,000 accrued.
The $160 difference is corrected. Depending on the process, that is either a true-up against the original accrual, or the February accrual is reversed and re-posted at the correct figure. The full cycle is: accrue, then reverse, then re-accrue, then true-up. Those four steps get confused constantly, and each has its own page for that reason.
A pattern worth watching: if the true-up is large every month, the accrual method is broken rather than merely imprecise. An accrual that is out by 15% every period is not an estimate. It is a guess.
What this means?
For Finance, the accrual is only as good as the commission calculation underneath it. Accruing at an average commission rate ignores tiers, accelerators, overlays, and manager rollup, all of which mean actual commission can be materially higher than a simple percentage suggests. That error is biased, not random: it is largest on the biggest deals and in the strongest quarters, which is precisely when a surprise is least welcome.
Note also that an accrual and a pending payout usually describe the same money. One is the ledger entry, the other is the admin status. They should reconcile, and when they do not, that is a signal worth chasing rather than a rounding difference.

How Visdum handles commission accrual
Visdum produces the accrual from the actual calculation rather than from an average rate. The plan is applied to the deals that closed in the period, including tiers, accelerators, splits, and overlay and rollup credit, so the accrued figure is the commission the plan actually owes rather than an approximation of it.
Because the commission period is an explicit property rather than a spreadsheet filter, the deals in the accrual are the same deals that will be in the payout, which is what makes the two reconcile. The accrued liability and the pending payout queue are views of the same figure, so a discrepancy between them surfaces rather than hides, and the true-up is a small correction instead of a monthly event.

Frequently asked questions
What is a commission expense accrual?
A commission expense accrual is the journal entry that records commission in the period the sale happened, before the cash is paid. It debits commission expense and credits an accrued liability. This matches the commission cost to the revenue that produced it, rather than to the month the payment happens to leave.
What is the journal entry for accrued commission?
When the commission is earned, debit commission expense and credit accrued commission liability. When it is later paid, debit the accrued commission liability and credit cash. The payment entry does not touch the profit and loss account at all, because the expense was already recognized in the earlier period.
Why does paying commission not create an expense?
Because the expense was recognized when the commission was earned, not when it was paid. The payment simply extinguishes a liability that already exists on the balance sheet and moves cash. This is counter-intuitive but it is the whole purpose of accruing: the cost belongs in the month the revenue was booked.
What happens if the accrual is wrong?
It gets corrected, either by a true-up against the original accrual or by reversing it and re-posting at the correct figure. The full cycle runs accrue, reverse, re-accrue, and true-up. If the correction is large every single month, the accrual method itself is broken rather than merely imprecise.
How should commission be accrued accurately?
By applying the actual comp plan to the deals that closed, rather than multiplying revenue by an average rate. An average ignores tiers, accelerators, overlays, and manager rollup, all of which raise the true cost. That error is biased rather than random, because it is largest on the biggest deals in the strongest quarters.
What is the difference between an accrual and a pending payout?
They usually describe the same money seen by different people. The accrual is the ledger entry recognizing a liability for the period. The pending payout is the admin status of commission that has been calculated but not yet approved or released. They should reconcile, and a gap between them is a signal worth investigating.
